TOPROL-XL uses extended-release technology
TOPROL-XL is a tablet with an extended-release technology that provides medication for a 24-hour period with one dose daily.
The tablets contain metoprolol succinate in a multitude of controlled released pellets. Each pellet act as seperate drug delivery unit and is designed to deliver metoprolol continously over the 24-hour period.

What is TOPROL-XL®?
TOPROL-XL is used to treat high blood pressure, chest pain or discomfort due to coronary heart disease (angina pectoris), and heart failure. It may be used alone or in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure.
What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking TOPROL-XL®?
Before staring TOPROL-XL, tell your healthcare provider about all of the medications you are taking (including high blood pressure medicines) and all of your medical conditions, including if you have adrenal gland tumors, diabetes, low blood sugar, liver damage, overactive thyroid disease, or hardening of the arteries in the arms or legs.
What is the most important information I need to know about taking TOPROL-XL®?
- It is important to take TOPROL-XL regularly and continuously, as directed by your healthcare provider, preferably with or immediately following meals. If you miss a dose, take only the next scheduled dose (do not double it). Do not interrupt or discontinue TOPROL-XL without talking to your healthcare provider first.
- Tell your healthcare provider if you have any difficulty in breathing, shortness of breath or weight gain.
- Patients who have asthma or asthma-like lung disease should, in general, not take TOPROL-XL.
- If you have a history of severe anaphylactic reactions, you may be unresponsive to the usual doses of epinephrine used to treat allergic reactions while taking TOPROL-XL.
- Avoid operating automobiles and machinery or other activities requiring alertness until you know how you will react to TOPROL-XL.
- Tell your healthcare providers, including dentists, that you are taking TOPROL-XL before any type of surgery.
When should I NOT take TOPROL-XL®?
TOPROL-XL may not be right for everyone, especially people who have the following health conditions:
- Allergies to TOPROL-XL or its ingredients
- Severe slowing of the heart rate
- Sudden and severe drop in blood pressure and blood flow through the body because the heart is not pumping normally
- Uncontrolled heart failure
- Slowdown of the heart's electrical signal causing a slower heart rate
- Damage to the heart's natural pacemaker that affects the heart's rhythm unless one has a pacemaker device
What are some of the most common side effects of TOPROL-XL®?
The most common side effects of TOPROL-XL® are tiredness, dizziness, depression, shortness of breath, slow heart rate, low blood pressure, diarrhea, itchy skin, and rash.
TOPROL-XL is indicated for the treatment of high blood pressure. It may be used alone or in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure. It's good for you to know more about your medical condition and the medicine you are taking for it, so talk to your doctor about high blood pressure and TOPROL-XL.
